
Rowell Rallies Keys to Dramatic Finish

In an action packed final two innings, the Keys (16-16, 57-45) rallied to defeat the Lynchburg Hillcats (14-18, 43-59), 8-7, in 10 innings. Frederick led by three runs entering the ninth but saw that lead disappear. After allowing two runs in the top of the 10th, 2B Miguel Abreu capped off the three-run inning with a walk-off single that brought home 3B Billy Rowell.
RHP Oliver Drake started Wednesday night's contest with a 1-2-3 inning. Frederick's offense gave their starter some serious run support in the bottom of the first. The Keys scored four runs in the inning including two on a Buck Britton double to left.
Lynchburg scored two runs in the second on a two-run homerun by 1B Chris Richburg. The two Hillcats runs would be the final runs either team would score until the eighth inning.
Oliver Drake left the game after six inning of work. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Keys scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the eighth to give them a three-run lead entering the ninth inning. RHP Josh Dowdy entered the game as he tried to notch his second save of the year. After striking out CF Denis Phipps, Dowdy gave up a double to 1B Chris Richburg. Dowdy struck out RF Kyle Day but he reached on a wild pitch. After another strikeout, 3B Jose Gualdron hit a double to leftfield to bring home 1B Chris Richburg. Down by just two, the Hillcats tied up the game on a two-run double by SS Shane Carlson.
Frederick did not score in the bottom of the ninth as they game entered extra innings. Lynchburg plated two runs to give them a 7-5 lead. Lynchburg sent their closer, LHP Donnie Joseph, to the hill for the bottom of the 10th. Joseph, who entered the game 11 for 12 in saves this season in the Carolina League, struck out C Phillip Britton to begin the inning. After an infield single by CF Xavier Avery, LF Kyle Hudson hit a double down the leftfield line. RF Ronnie Welty hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Avery and cut the Keys' deficit to just one run.
With two out, 3B Billy Rowell stepped to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Rowell roped a single into rightfield that brought home Kyle Hudson from second base. With 2B Miguel Abreu at bat, Rowell took of for second. He swiped the bag and then advanced to third base on the throwing error by C Kevin Coddington. On the next pitch, Abreu hit a groundball to left side of the infield. SS Brodie Greene gloved it but his throw to first was not in time. Rowell scored the game-winning run as Frederick prevailed, 8-7.
After a tough outing, Josh Dowdy notched his first Carolina League victory on Wednesday night.
Frederick hits the road for a three-game series against the Potomac Nationals. RHP Zach Clark (1-0, 3.00) will start for Frederick while the P-Nats will start RHP Marcos Frias (4-4, 5.92). First pitch is set for 7:03 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge,VA.
