Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 27, 2010) - Winston-Salem scored six runs in the seventh inning to come back and beat Kinston 8-5 on Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash turned a 3-2 deficit into a five-run lead, capped by Drew Garcia's three-run home run that clinched the series victory.
Kinston (13-18, 49-52) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Winston starter Joe Serafin. Karexon Sanchez walked with two outs and Abner Abreu singled. Chun Chen drove them both in with a double to center to put the K-Tribe on the board.
The Dash (60-42) tied the game in the fifth against Joey Mahalic. Luis Sierra singled and Logan Johnson doubled to start the inning. Kenny Williams grounded to second base to score Sierra and Mike Richard hit a sacrifice fly to level the game at two apiece.
The K-Tribe re-gained the lead in the seventh. Serafin allowed three straight hits to start the inning. Kyle Bellows hit an RBI double to put the Indians on top 3-2. With men on the corners and no one out, Garrett Johnson came in to get out of the jam.
Johnson (2-0) got Jeremie Tice to bounce a ball to the third baseman. Luis Sierra caught Bellows in a rundown between third and home for the first out. Johnson then got Doug Pickens to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play to retire the side without further damage.
Down a run to start the bottom of the seventh, Winston's rally started with a Jose Martinez double. Sierra then bunted a ball back to Mahalic, who tried unsuccessfully to throw out Martinez at third. Both men were safe and Logan Johnson stood in with runners on the corners and nobody out. He lined a double off Abreu's glove in right to score Martinez and tie the game at three. With two men in scoring position and no outs, Travis Turek entered from the bullpen for Kinston.
Turek got Williams to ground out before getting ahead of Mike Richard 1-2. Richard proceeded to bounce a ball past the drawn-in third baseman. Sierra scored from third and the Dash led 4-3. Brandon Short followed with an RBI single to right to double the Winston lead.
Garcia then had the big blow, a three-run home run to right field, just under the bridge. That finished off a six-run inning, tying the highest-scoring frame of the season for the Dash.
The K-Tribe tightened up the contest with two runs off Brandon Kloess in the eighth inning. Bellows belted a two-run homer, his eighth of the season. Two more reached base with two outs and Tyson Corley came in to face Lucas Montero, who represented the tying run. Corley got Montero to strike out and end the threat.
Kinston went down in order in the ninth inning, earning Corley his fourth save in six chances. He preserved a win for Garrett Johnson, who pitched two scoreless innings. Mahalic (3-6) was the loser, giving up five runs in six-plus innings pitched.
The Dash finished the home stand with a 4-3 record and avoided losing back-to-back home games to the Indians for what would have been the first time in nearly two years.
Winston starts a three-game road trip to Myrtle Beach on Thursday night. RHP Stephen Sauer (6-7, 4.78) opposes LHP Matt Crim (5-9, 5.07) in a 7:05 p.m. start. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
