Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Columbus' Heath Rollins threw five innings of no-hit ball and Charleston committed four errors as the Catfish reeled in the RiverDogs, 5-2, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 4,236 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the Catfish extend their winning streak to five games and improve to 13-8 on the season while the RiverDogs conclude their season-high seven-game winning streak and fall to 13-8.
Rollins, who pitched on the college level at Winthrop, faced 19 batters and fanned seven while walking four. He improved his record to 2-0 on the season. Brian Baker collected his first save as he finished the final 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit while striking out three.
The Catfish's no-hit bid was broken up in the sixth by Seth Fortenberry with a one-out infield single up the middle off of Columbus reliever Wilton Noel.
Columbus scored a run in each of their first three trips to the plate against Charleston starter Tim Norton (1-3). In the first inning, Nevin Ashley drove home a run when he singled up the middle with two out to score John Matulia.
The Catfish added another run in the second when Maiko Loyola opened the frame with a single to right field. Then when Loyola stole second base, RiverDogs' catcher Jose Gil's throw went into centerfield and Loyola took third base. He later scored on Norton's wild pitch.
In the third, Columbus extended their lead to 3-0 on a two-out, RBI bunt by Ashley that plated Desmond Jennings, who opened the inning by singling, moved to second on a single by Matulia and advanced to third on a double-play. The Catfish pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning, both of which were unearned thanks to three RiverDogs errors.
Charleston scored its runs on a two-RBI single by Gil in the bottom of the seventh inning against Columbus reliever Wilton Noel.
RiverDog Mitch Hilligoss collected a single in the seventh to extend his team-high hitting streak to eight games. It was one of the club's four hits on the evening.
Norton allowed all five Columbus runs, two earned, on nine hits in five innings. Entering the contest with the league's third most strikeouts, the right-hander fanned three for a season's total of 32.
Columbus collected 10 hits on the night with Matulia, Cesar Suarez and Ashley each recording two.
Game 2 of this four-game series is set for Friday night with left-hander Angel Reyes (0-1, 2.03 ERA) pitching for Charleston while Columbus counters with right-hander Wade Townsend (3-1, 2.37 ERA). The game is slated for 7:05 p.m., but will not start until 30 minutes after the conclusion of The Citadel - College of Charleston game that begins at 5 p.m.
