COLUMBUS, GAâ¹ RHP Landestoy Troncoso fired three scoreless innings of relief and the Catfish beat the Charleston RiverDogs 4-2 tonight at Golden Park to split a four-game series with the New York Yankees Single-A Affiliate. C Juan Apodaca homered for the Catfish in the win which improves the Catfish to 12-22 on the season. Charleston drops to 21-13 on the season with the loss. RHP Albenis Castillo picked up his first save of the season by finishing the game out of the bullpen.
LHP Scott Elbert started for the Catfish, and the 2004 1st Rounder did not disappoint, striking out seven in four innings for the second straight time on the mound. He allowed one run to the RiverDogs, as Charleston took the lead 1-0 in the 4th on a solo HR by SS Marcos Vechionacci. The Catfish struck for two unearned runs off RiverDog starter RHP Jeff Marquez when 1B Dan Batz drove home a run with a single and RF James Peterson lifted a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Fish a 2-1 lead. Troncoso relieved Elbert and retired nine of the ten RiverDogs he faced, striking out three in the process.
The Catfish added two runs in the seventh against Charleston RHP Randy Vanderplow when C Juan Apodaca went deep to left for his second HR of the year and SS David Nicholson drove home LF Ryan Russ with an RBI single to right. Leading 4-1 in the 8th, the Catfish got out of a jam when RHP Chris Malone struck out DH Ben Jones with the bags packed and the tying run at first. Castillo gave up a run in the ninth and had the tying run at first but got a flyout to center to preserve the Catfish victory.
Tomorrow the Catfish start an eight-game roadtrip when they take on the Augusta GreenJackets (San Francisco Giants) at 7:15 at Augusta¹s Lake Olmstead Stadium. RHP Javy Guerra (2-2, 5.96 ERA, 6 GS) takes the mound for the Catfish. All of the Catfish games this week on the road can be heard live on WDAK 540 AM in Columbus.
