CORPUS CHRISTI -- The Jason Castro Watch in Corpus Christi is over. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound catcher will be in a Hooks uniform at Whataburger Field the day after tomorrow.
The Houston Astros' top minor league prospect according to Baseball America joins the Hooks in time for a four-game homestand with Midland this week.
Castro was selected in the first round (10th overall pick) of MLB's amateur draft out of Stanford last summer. He led the Cardinal to the 2008 College World Series with a team-best .376 average, 18 doubles, 14 home runs and 73 RBI's in 67 games. An All-PAC 10 selection, Castro led the conference in hits (105) and was second in total bases (171).
In his college career, Castro hit .309 with 18 homers and 106 runs batted in over 162 games.
In 56 games at High-A Lancaster of the California League, Castro is batting .309/7/44 with 20 doubles.
