Richmond Roosters News Release
Florence, Kentucky - The Richmond Roosters made their first ever appearance at Champion Window Field on Sunday and the Florence Freedom might be wishing that it was also the last. Tony Casoli hurled a complete game shutout and the Roosters defeated Florence 5-0 in the first of a three game series. Richmond has now won five of it's last seven games.
The performance by Casoli was the best outing by any Roosters pitcher this season. Casoli stuck out four and walked only one as he contolled the game from start to finish. "I told Mong (Roosters Manager Chris Mongiardo) that I was going to give him some good innings" he said, "this is exactly what we needed because our bullpen has been overworked." It was the second complete game for a Roosters pitcher this season. Richard Barkley fired a five hit shutout on May 27th in a 4-0 win at Washington.
The Roosters grabbed one run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. The final runs came in the sixth and ninth innings as Casoli slammed the door shut on the Freedom. Casoli (1-0) got his first decision of the year and Drew Parr (0-2) lasted 4 2/3 innings and lost for Florence. The game was delayed 35 minutes due to rain before Richmond got to play it's first game in franchise history at the newest ballpark in the Frontier League.
The Roosters (26-34) continue the series in Florence on Monday night against the Freedom (16-41). Florence has now lost eight of it's last nine games. Richmond will start Dave Campos (1-1, 6.42 ERA) and the Freedom will counter with Joel Posey (0-1 10.80 ERA). Game time is set for 6:05pm (Indiana time) at Champion Window Field.
