Casadilla, Myers Shine as Spikes Top Scrappers, 4-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Franyel Casadilla logged six-plus quality innings on the mound, and Wood Myers powered the offense with three hits, as the State College Spikes dealt the Mahoning Valley Scrappers their first loss of the year with a 4-1 win on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Casadilla (1-0) limited the Scrappers (5-1) to five hits and two walks in the first six walks before hitting the first batter of the seventh. The right-hander, who was charged with one run against him, struck out seven batters on the night and logged 102 pitches, 68 of them going for strikes.

Myers helped fuel a strong start for the Spikes (3-3) by doubling in State College's second run of the opening inning, and scored himself on Andres Luna's RBI single two batters later.

The Spikes opened up the scoring in their three-run first when Brendan Donovan scored on a balk.

Mahoning Valley then plated its lone run on Jose Fermin's double in the seventh, but the Spikes added an insurance run when Brady Whalen knocked in Justin Toerner in the bottom of the same frame.

Reliever Eli Kraus (1), the St. Louis Cardinals' 24th-round draft choice out of Kent State in 2018, tossed two perfect innings to finish the game for State College in his pro debut. Kraus struck out three batters in the effort.

Toerner aided the offense as well by notching the first three-hit game of his professional career.

The Spikes' win also thrilled the numerous dogs in attendance for the first Bark in the Park Night of the year, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital and NEWSRADIO 1390 WRSC.

Mahoning Valley starter Juan Mota (0-1) took the loss after yielding three runs on eight hits while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings.

The game was delayed 14 minutes at the outset by rain.

Thursday, the Spikes hit the road for their first extended trip away from Central PA this summer as they face the West Virginia Black Bears for the first game of a three-game set at Monongalia County Ballpark. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Winston Nicacio (0-0) on the mound for State College. West Virginia is slated to start right-hander Osvaldo Bido (0-1) on the hill.

Following the three games in West Virginia, the Spikes return home on Sunday to start a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Fans will be looking forward to seeing Tim "Wild Thang" Lepard and Team GhostRiders once again, as the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo comes back to State College for Sunday's game. The return of this unique act, featuring monkeys riding dogs herding sheep in an unforgettably entertaining experience, will thrill fans of all ages.

After the game, the skies will light up with a fantastic FIREWORKS show presented by Penn State Health, Official Healthcare Provider of Penn State Athletics.

Plus, it's a Sunday Kids Day at the ballpark, presented by First National Bank, with a pre-game catch on the field from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. and the chance for kids to run the bases after the game. In addition, the first 250 kids 12 and under eat for free thanks to Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, with a coupon for a free hot dog, chips and small soda.

The Spikes will then finish their series against Batavia with a Monday Buck Night, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ, with a MillerCoors Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m., followed by a $2 Walking Taco Tuesday, presented by B94.5, on a BB&T Books & Baseball Night.
