Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany Devils rolled their winning streak to three games with a 2-1 victory against the Springfield Falcons Saturday at the Times Union Center. Brad Mills had the deciding goal and Alexander Vasyunov also scored as the Devils improve to 27-34-1-3 on the year and 5-2-0-0 in their last seven games. Springfield goes to 30-31-2-3.
"A lot of our younger guys have come a long way this year and they are playing really well," Mills said. "We're playing much better defensively, we've had some great goaltending and we've had timely goals. It's a lot of small things that are contributing."
Mills' winner came at 6:39 of the third period. Jay Leach sent the puck behind the net where Matt Anderson scooped it up and made a centering pass. Mills was there for the one-timer past the glove of Gustal Wesslau. The goal was Mills' 10th of the season and second game-winning tally.
"[Adam] Henrique made a good play to get it out of our end," Mills said. "Anderson took the puck behind the net and I was able to find some open space in front. He made a really good play to come back the near side and find me. I was able to get a shot off before the goalie could readjust."
Dave Caruso, who was recalled from Trenton (ECHL) on Mar. 11, made 28 stops and earned his sixth win of the season to improve to 6-6-0 on the year. Caruso is 4-1-0 in his last five AHL contests.
"The guys played well in front of me," Caruso said. "I left a couple of rebounds in front and they did a good job of clearing them. I was able to see the puck pretty well. I played four games in six nights down in Trenton, so I'm kind of getting into a rhythm."
Vasyunov began the scoring at 15:05 of the first period thanks to a feed from the corner by Olivier Magnan. Vasyunov received the puck in the slot and shot against the grain, beating Wesslau as he slid out of position. The goal, which was also assisted by Alexander Urbom, was Vasyunov's seventh of the season.
Springfield evened things at 7:49 of the first period when Tomas Kana picked a corner on a one-timer from the left slot. Tomas Kubalik registered the lone assist.
Wesslau took the loss with 28 saves on 30 shots. He is now 12-15-1.
It will be a quick turnover for the Devils, who return to the Times Union Center tomorrow for a 4 p.m. outing against the Syracuse Crunch. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports (Ch. 3).
Tickets can be purchased at the Times Union Center Box Office or at any ticket master outlet. Fans can also get tickets by dialing 800-745-3000 or online at ticketmaster.com.
The Devils are offering a Family 4 Pack for that game. For just $62, fans will receive four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas. The first 2,000 people to arrive will receive a Devil Dawg Bobblehead and an All-Star Wine & Spirits autograph session will follow the game.
