March 12, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, March 12)... The Rochester Americans will travel to battle the Syracuse Crunch tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the War Memorial at Oncenter. Fans can tune in live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The game will be televised LIVE on Channel 98.
The Amerks will try to break their three-game losing streak, which included a 6-5 loss to the Toronto Marlies last night. Rochester scored five unanswered goals against the Marlies but fell just short at The Blue Cross Arena. With the loss, the Amerks dropped to (29-30-3-3). Mike Kostka (2+1) led the Amerks' comeback bid, which included two second-period goals to cut the deficit to 6-2. Kostka is now tied for second on the team in points with 44 (12+32), which places him the Top 5 in points among AHL defensemen. Captain Chris Taylor (0+2), who assisted on both those goals, Colby Robak (1+1), Mark Cullen (1+1) and Jeff LoVecchio (1+1) also all had multi-point outings in the game. In the joint effort, goaltenders Tyler Plante and Marc Cheverie blocked 26 of 32 attempts in the loss. Cullen, who recently reached the 400-point plateau, needs just nine more games to reach 500 for his career in the American Hockey League. Hugh Jessiman, fresh of his NHL debut with Florida, is four points away from eclipsing the 200-point plateau. Jessiman is also three games shy of 400 for his career and four assists short of 100.
The Amerks show a 5-3-0-0 record against the Crunch this season, including a 2-1 overtime win in their most recent get-together with Syracuse. Rochester also maintains the upper hand with a 96-79-15 lifetime showing against its longtime intrastate rival. The Crunch enter the contest with a 23-33-3-4 record (53 points) and occupy seventh place in the East Division. Syracuse defeated the Texas Stars 1-0 in a shootout last night to secure its third straight win. J.P. Levasseur stopped all 34 shots he faced in regulation and overtime. He picked up his fifth shutout of the season, tying him for third in the AHL. Five of Levasseur's nine wins this season have come by shutout. Syracuse is led by rookie Nicolas Deschamps and veteran Josh Green, who are tied for the team lead with 34 points each.
The Amerks conclude their three-games in three-night stretch on Sunday as they travel to take on the Hamilton Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. at Copps Coliseum. Fans can tune in live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
