Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
ROY, NY - Antonio Nuñez scored on a bases-loaded grounder off the bat of Cesar Carrasco with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats erased a six-run deficit to top the Staten Island Yankees 11-10 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Saturday night.
The 'Cats never led in the game until that final play, as the Yankees jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, then four in the third.
Tri-City kept the game close, scoring a run of their own in the first frame, while responding with three in the third. Unfortunately, the Staten Island offense kept pushing ahead, eventually extending their lead to 10-4 entering the seventh-inning stretch.
That, however, was when the 'Cats rally began, as left fielder Edwin Medina drove home Nuñez in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI ground out, then centerfielder Johnny Sewald scored on a Staten Island error, cutting the Yankees' lead to 10-6.
That's where the score stood until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Carrasco hit a one-out double to centerfield, scoring Sewald and Medina. Then, after Carrasco scored on a single by designated hitter Trent Woodward, pinch hitter Dexter McCall grounded into a force out to second base, then advanced to second on a throwing error. Shortstop Kolbey Carpenter then came up and tied the game with two outs, smacking a double to centerfield to score McCall.
Tri-City closer Adam Whitt, who had entered the game with two outs in the top of the eighth, retired all seven batters he faced, including all three in order in the top of the tenth inning.
That led into the bottom of the tenth, when Nuñez and Sewald hit back-to-back one-out singles, then Medina walked to load the bases.
That brought up Carrasco, who hit a grounder to Staten Island second baseman Thairo Estrada, who threw Carrasco out at first, allowing Nuñez to come home to score, giving the 'Cats their first walk-off victory of 2015.
Carrasco's two RBI's increased his New York-Penn League-leading total to 12, while Sewald (3-6, 3R), Medina (2-4, 3R, RBI), Woodward (2-4, 2RBI), Nuñez (3-5, 2R) and Carpenter (2-5, 2RBI) all added stellar offensive performances, as well.
The 'Cats will look to keep up their late-game momentum as they head to Norwich, Conn., to take on the Connecticut Tigers. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Ralph Garza (0-0, 4.50), while the starter for the Tigers has yet to be announced.
