Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners fell behind Saturday night but as they've done all season long they rebounded, tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and took a lead in the third that they would not relinquish, sweeping Aberdeen for a 4-3 win at LeLacheur Park.
The night, dedicated to Chelmsford, kicked off with a special first pitch from Chelmsford native Jeff Bauman and Boston Marathon hero Carlos Arredondo as part of Red Bandanna Night, presented by the American Heroes Channel.
Aberdeen (2-7) got on the board in the second inning after a leadoff single and a pair of hit batters loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly brought in the first run and an infield single plated another to put the Spinners into a 2-0 hole.
Lowell (8-1) evened the score in the second with Chad De La Guerra getting the inning started with a one-out double. A Hector Lorenzana single brought him home to cut the deficit to one. With two-outs the Spinners delivered yet another two-out hit with a Jordon Austin single evening the score at two.
The Spinners took the lead in the third once again after two quick outs. Mitch Gunsolus reached on an error and Josh Ockimey scored him from first with an RBI single to give Lowell a 3-2 lead.
Lowell would add a very important insurance run in the sixth with De La Guerra again getting things started with a double. After Aberdeen went to the bullpen for Caleb Kellogg, a fly out moved De La Guerra to third and a force out from Austin brought him home to push the lead to 4-2.
Aberdeen would answer with a run in the seventh after Taylor Nunez came out of the bullpen in relief of Jose Almonte. A bunt single led off the inning and Cedric Mullins promptly stole second base. A single up the middle by Drew Tubrin pulled Aberdeen within a run but they would get no closer as Nunez closed out the win.
De La Guerra continued his torrid pace, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Over his past two games, De La Guerra is 5-for-9 with all five hits being doubles. Austin was the Player of the Game, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Ockimey added a two hit game and an RBI as well.
Almonte (2-0, 2.25) allowed the two second inning runs but was otherwise effective, striking out seven over six innings pitched. Nunez picked up the save, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one.
The Spinners 8-1 start is now their best start since 2003, which featured a 9-1 start to the campaign. The team heads to Vermont Sunday morning for the first of three with the Lake Monsters. Dioscar Romero (0-1, 40.50) gets the ball for a scheduled 5:05 first pitch.
