Carolina Shut out 2-0 at Down East

KINSTON - Eduardo Garcia and Jesus Chirinos both had two hits and starter Ryne Moore totaled a career high nine strikeouts, but the Carolina Mudcats were shut out for the first time this season as the Down East Wood Ducks took Thursday's game 2-0 at Grainger Stadium in Kinston.

Down East (8-9) scored a run in the first and one more in the second while defeating the Mudcats (8-9) for the first time this season. The Thursday night victory for the Wood Ducks also tied the current series at a game apiece (1-1).

Moore (0-1) allowed just the two runs, but ended up with the tough luck loss as the Mudcats were blanked by Down East starter Jose Corniell and relievers Robby Ahlstrom and Michael Brewer.

Corniell (1-0) struck out four and scattered three hits over five innings while earning the victory. Ahstrom (H, 1) worked the sixth, seventh and part of the eighth while holding Carolina scoreless. He also allowed three hits and struck out five. Brewer (S, 1) then worked the ninth and retired the side in order to earn the save.

Carolina relievers Pablo Garabitos and Junior Montero worked the seventh and eighth and combined to hold Down East without a run.

Leadoff man Alejandro Osuna scored both Down East runs while going 2-for-3. He singled and scored in the first and walked before scoring in the second.
