Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.- The Delmarva Shorebirds finally broke out of their recent funk as they snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night at SRP Park.
The Shorebirds (6-12) had multiple opportunities early, but it was the GreenJackets (9-9) who struck first in the fourth inning.
Brandol Mezquita singled with one away and Stephen Paolini followed by banging a double off the left-center wall, scoring Mezquita to put Augusta ahead 1-0.
The lead didn't last long as Noelberth Romero began the top of the fifth for Delmarva with a solo homer, his second of the season, to knot the score at 1-1.
Isaac Bellony kicked off the sixth with a double for Delmarva and moved to third on a wild pitch with one away. Running on contact on a grounder to second with the infield in, Bellony initially was caught in a rundown before an errant throw to the plate allowed Bellony to score and put Delmarva ahead 2-1.
The Shorebirds built on their lead in the seventh. With two on and nobody out, Darell Hernaiz ripped a double down the leftfield line, plating both runners, to make it 4-1.
Augusta got those runs right back in the bottom of the seventh. The GreenJackets loaded the bases with one away and managed to plate a run on a wild pitch and an RBI infield single for Caleb Durbin, cutting the deficit back to one.
The Shorebirds bullpen held serve the rest of the game however, as Preston Price spun a scoreless eighth and Alex Pham followed suit in the ninth to lock up the 4-3 win.
