Match Preview:
The Carolina RailHawks (9W-6D-10L; 33 pts; 6th place) host the New York Cosmos (15W-4D-7L; 43 pts; 1st place) Wednesday night at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7:30 p.m. ET. While this is the third meeting between the two teams in 2016, it is the first time the Cosmos will be traveling to WakeMed Soccer Park this year. Carolina dropped a close 1-0 match against the Cosmos in the Spring Season, but suffered a 6-1 defeat to the Cosmos at Shuart Stadium last month and will be looking for retribution at home on Wednesday. On May 1, Yohandry Orozco scored the lone goal of the game in the 45th minute, despite a staunch RailHawks defense against last year's NASL Championship winning team. Though the RailHawks struck first on August 27 with a Matt Fondy goal in the 6th minute, it was the home team that ran away with the three points.
Last Time Out:
Carolina is coming off a 1-0 win against a third place Edmonton FC team, which extended the club's home unbeaten streak to nine games. Austin da Luz scored his fourth goal of the season in the 34th minute of the game when Omar Bravo set up the midfielder in the box. The game also served as Brian Sylvestre's fifth straight game in net; in his last five starts he has only allowed two goals. The RailHawks have not lost at home since their Spring Season match on May 7 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and will look to stretch the streak to ten games on Wednesday night.
Go Gold Month For Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month
The RailHawks are going gold for pediatric cancer awareness this month. The club will be raising money for a pediatric cancer-specific grant with the American Cancer Society alongside seven other NASL teams. For more information on the movement, click here. To donate, click here.
Players to Watch: Battle of the Keepers
#13 Connor Tobin
The sturdy defender was designated as Saturday night's "Man of the Match" in Carolina's 1-0 win over FC Edmonton. In that match, Tobin had six clearances, three interceptions and he won three out of four duels to help Sylvestre preserve his clean sheet. A man of consistency, Tobin has been part of a RailHawks defense that has only allowed two goals in September. He also leads the RailHawks with 78 total clearances.
#11 Andrés Flores
Though Andrés Flores trails Nazmi Albadawi for the most assists in the league, Flores has picked up six throughout 2016, good enough to be tied for second place in the NASL. The playmaker and former captain of 2014's El Salvador team in the Copa Centroamericana, has also tallied three goals.
Coming Up Next:
The RailHawks will travel to Oklahoma for a face-off against Rayo OKC on October 2 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on WRAL2 and TWC SportsChannel. They will then return home for a 7:30 game against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on October 8 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
