
Carolina defeats Birmingham

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats snapped a four-game losing streak as they beat the Birmingham Barons 8-1 Saturday night at Five County Stadium in front of 5,986 fans.
The Carolina offense batted around twice in the game while smacking a total 13 hits. Five Mudcats had two hits while Stephen Chapman had three. Jake Kahaulelio went 2-4 out of the leadoff spot, scoring a run and driving in two. Korey Feiner scored twice and drove in two runs, going 2-3 on the night.
Birmingham starter Kyle McCulloch (L, 8-9) gave up four earned runs on eight hits and a walk during five innings on the hill. Barons' reliever John Lujan also struggled, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Camilo Vazquez (W, 2-4) started for the Mudcats, yielding only one earned run during 5 1/3 innings pitched. Joe Krebs relieved Vazquez with one out in the sixth inning and would hold the Barons scoreless for the next 2 2/3 innings. Greg Atencio tossed a perfect ninth while striking out the side.
The series finale is set for 2 PM Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. Carolina's Alexander Smit (2-2, 3.36) will make his first start since returning from the disabled list against Birmingham's Johnny Lowe (0-2, 9.82).
