Carolina Mudcats News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Will Childers turned in his second career quality start, Luis Castillo hit a solo homer, Tayden Hall had two hits while extending his hitting streak to 10 straight games, but the first-place Carolina Mudcats lost a four-run sixth inning lead while falling to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Atrium Health Ballpark.
Childers started and worked through six complete with just one run allowed on three hits and one walk. He also struck out three while turning in his second career quality start. Childers left with the Mudcats (29-19, 62-49) leading 5-1 and would end up without a decision.
The Mudcats initially gave Childers some early runs to work with after scoring three hits in the first while going up 3-0 in the opening frame. Dylan O'Rae started that early rally with a leadoff single before scoring on a RBI single from Hall. Jace Avina later walked with the bags full to force in a run and Blayberg Diaz had a sac fly while accounting for the other two first-inning runs.
The Cannon Ballers (24-24, 59-54) eventually answered with a run in the home half of the first when Chris Lanzilli connected on a two-out RBI single off Childers to cut the lead down to 3-1.
Castillo's homer in the third and Reidy Mercado's RBI single in the sixth lifted the Mudcats into a 5-1 lead, but the Cannon Ballers erased that deficit with four runs off reliever Jeison Pena to tie the game in the seventh. Carolina went on to get one back to briefly take a 6-5 lead, but Kannapolis added three, two-out runs in the eighth off Chase Costello while going up 8-6.
Pena hit the first batter he faced in the seventh before allowing a RBI triple to Ryan Galanie. Pena went on to get a pop out and a strikeout against his next two batters, but walked a batter and saw another run score on a double steal. He then walked another before he was pulled from the game. Costello (L, 7-3) took over and went on to allow a game-tying two-run single to Rikuu Nishidi.
A Gregory Barrios sac fly in the eighth briefly put Carolina up again 6-5, but Costello allowed two-straight one-out singles before walking a batter and giving up a two-out two-run single to Wilber Sanchez. Mario Camilletti then added some insurance with a RBI single to left. Camilletti's hit also led to final out of the inning as the Mudcats threw out Sanchez at home to end the frame.
The Mudcats did manage to get two men on to start the ninth, but Logan Lyle eventually finished the game without allowing a run while earning his first save of the season.
The loss sealed a series victory for the Cannon Ballers as they took four of six from the Mudcats in the series.
Carolina next plays at home on Tuesday, August 22 with game one of a 12-game homestand at Five County Stadium. The next home stand starts with six games versus Columbia and six game versus Down East.
