Carlos Terán Selected to MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 5
March 27, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Fire FC defender Carlos Terán and midfielder Brian Gutiérrez were named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 5 following stellar individual performances in Saturday night's dramatic 3-2 win on the road against Inter Miami CF.
Terán was resolute in his defensive efforts against the Miami attack on Saturday and even got himself on the scoresheet, leading to his inclusion in the TOTM's first XI. The 22-year-old led all field players with eight defensive actions on the night according to Stats Perform and scored the third goal of his Fire career in the 38th minute of the match with a decisive individual effort.
After the ball was played into the Miami 18-yard-box on a restart, Terán muscled off a handful of defenders to pull down a Kacper Pzybyłko header at the near post. The Colombian's first attempt on net was blocked, but his second made no mistake.
Gutiérrez produced a second-straight impact performance in central midfield, picking up his second and third assists of the young season on the night. He was selected to the MLS TOTM's bench for his effort. The 19-year-old Homegrown product's influence was on display in the final moments of the match, as his setup to Kei Kamara in second half stoppage time led to the match-winning goal. Picking up the ball inside the attacking half, Gutiérrez's driving run into the heart of the Miami defense pulled five defenders into his orbit, which freed up the on-running Kamara for an unmarked run into the 18-yard-box and a veteran finish in the 92nd minute.
The goal proved decisive, as the Fire held on to claim the 3-2 victory, giving the side its first win of the 2023 regular season in memorable fashion.
Chicago returns to Soldier Field for a three-game homestand that begins against D.C. United at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 1. Tickets for the match can be purchased here. The match will be broadcast live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+ and transmitted locally in Spanish on TUDN 1200 AM.
