Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Catcher Carlos Maldonado belted a two-run single in the fifth and launched a solo homer in the seventh as Indianapolis posted a 5-3 victory over Durham Friday evening at Victory Field.
Maldonado, who finished the contest 2-for-3 with three RBI, has now gone 7-for-13 with four runs and six RBI in his last four affairs. The sizzling pace comes after Maldonado went 5-for-27 with three runs and one RBI in his first nine games after being called up from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) on April 16.
The Indians, who have now won 13 of their last 19 contests, improve to 19-15 overall. The Bulls, who have dropped four of their last five road tilts, fall to 19-15 on the season.
Durham cracked the scoreboard with a run in the fourth when C Shawn Riggans doubled to left field and came plateward on DH Brent Butler's single through the left side.
Indianapolis responded with three runs in the fifth. 2B Jason Alfaro and 3B Yurendell de Caster had base knocks before LF Ray Sadler walked to load the bases. Maldonado followed by smacking a two-run single, while CF Rajai Davis added an RBI single to give the Tribe a 3-1 advantage.
The Bulls evened the affair with two runs in the sixth. 1B Kevin Witt blasted his eighth long ball of the campaign -- a solo dinger to right -- and Riggans scored on Butler's single to left.
Maldonado then whacked his third Triple-A homer of the year in the seventh inning and the Indians added an insurance run in the eighth.
Indianapolis RHP Terry Adams (1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) earned the win, improving to 2-1. RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.1 IP, 1 SO) notched his third save of the campaign, while LHP Sean Burnett (5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) took a no-decision.
Durham LHP Chris Seddon (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) fell to 3-3 with the loss despite beginning the game with four perfect innings. Riggans paced the Bulls offensively, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, two doubles and one triple.
The two clubs return to Victory Field Saturday evening at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. LHP Tom Gorzelanny is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Jason Hammel is the probable for Durham.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Saturday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
