TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the fifth of 12 meetings, the first of six at The Diamond. Braves are 1-3 vs. the Mud Hens. Game one of an eight game homestand (Braves went 3-4 on seven game road trip that ended yesterday). The Braves were 3-9 vs. the Mud Hens last season, 2-4 at The Diamond. This is the eighth of 48 games vs. West Division opponents (the Braves are 3-4), the first of 24 at home. Richmond was 18-30 vs. the West last season, 9-15 at home. The Braves are 383-331 vs. the Mud Hens all-time. The Braves are third in the South, 12 and a half games behind first place Charlotte. Toledo is second in the West, one game behind Indianapolis.
YESTERDAY'S GAME: The Columbus Clippers beat the Braves 3-2 in 12 innings Thursday at Cooper Stadium. Andy Cannizaro smacked a walk-off home run to give the Clippers the win. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Carlos Mendez. The Clippers tied the game in the home half on a run scoring single by Carlos Pena. Mitch Jones chased a run home with a sacrifice fly to give Columbus a 2-1 lead after one. The Braves tied the game in the eighth on Wes Timmons fourth home run of the season. Cannizaro ended the game with his first home run of the year in the 12th. Mark Corey was the winning pitcher. Wayne Franklin took the loss. Tony Pena had the Braves first four hit game of the season. Four Clippers had two hits each. Braves starter Ricardo Rodriguez worked 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Braves pitchers did not walk a man. Richmond was 1-16 with runners in scoring position. The game was delayed by rain for 31 minutes.
SWINGERS: The Braves have 29 hits in their last two games. Richmond has 10 or more hits in three straight games. Carlos Mendez has hits in seven straight games (9-25 .360). Jamal Strong has hits in six straight games (8-23 .348). Bill McCarthy and David Kelton had three game hitting streaks end yesterday. Tony Pena has hits in three straight games (8-12 .667). He had the club's first four hit game of the season yesterday. Pena has seven hits in his last nine at bats. His three game run scoring streak ended yesterday. Pena hit .448 on the club's recent road trip. Scott Thorman has hits in three straight games (5-15 .333). Wes Timmons has hits in three straight games (6-14 .429).
ROTATIONAL PULL: The Braves last 12 starting pitchers (Brian O'Connor, Anthony Lerew, Kevin Barry, Ricardo Rodriguez, Travis Smith, and Horacio Ramirez) have allowed just 17 earned runs in their last 71.3 innings (2.15 ERA). The Braves are 6-6 over that span. Braves starters have 28 strikeouts in their last 29 innings. 11 of the Braves last 12 starters have worked at least five innings. Only Horacio Ramirez, with the Braves on a rehab assignment and on a strict pitch count did not work at least five innings.
