Friday will be the third CareSource Veteran Salute date of the 2019 season.

The CareSource Veteran Salute Program provides veterans in the Dayton region with a once-in-a-lifetime experience to celebrate their service to their country. Each honoree has their story shared in front of the crowd at Fifth Third Field, followed by a standing ovation in appreciation of the veteran's hard work and dedication both in military and civilian accomplishments.

John's Story

John Brown joined the United States Army in 1946 when he was 18-years-old, after growing up in a log cabin with no electricity or indoor plumbing on his family's dairy farm in Middletown, Ohio.

During most of Brown's military career, he had a top-secret clearance in the Counterintelligence Corp (now known as the Military Intelligence). Brown has studied Korean, German, and Burmese, and was stationed in many places including Germany, Cleveland, New York, Hawaii, Texas and more.

In 1971, after serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., first at the 116th Military Intelligence Group, and later the Pentagon, where he was the Sergeant Major to the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. He was responsible for reviewing and preparing the daily summary of intelligence that was presented to the high-level staff, including President Richard Nixon.

Brown is a veteran of three wars World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After nearly 30 years of service, Brown retired from the U.S. Army in 1975. Brown then worked for the Lebanon Correctional Institute for 20 years before officially retiring in 1994.

Today, Brown lives in Franklin, Ohio, and is a sharp 91-year old who keeps busy working on a small farm and playing in a dulcimer band with his daughter. He also enjoys spending time with his two children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

CareSource's Veteran Salute program highlights five veterans' stories during the course of each season. Veterans who are chosen are honored at a Dragons game with an in-game ceremony and provided with VIP treatment during their special night. The program is an extension of CareSource's continued commitment to serving special populations and its new efforts to support veterans through innovative health and life services programs. If you know a veteran who deserves to be honored through this program, please submit their story at www.daytondragons.com/veteransalute.
