Arkansas Travelers News Release
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals finished off a four-game sweep of the Arkansas Travelers with another wild come-from-behind 8-7 win in 10 innings on Sunday night at Hammons Fields.
After LF Blake Gailen put Arkansas up 7-5 with a two-run home run in the 10th, the Cardinals clawed back for three in the 10th to win.
The Cardinals came back from deficits of 3-0, 7-5, 1-0 in the ninth, 3-0, 4-3, 4-2 and 7-5 in the 10th in the series.
Trailing 2-0 on Sunday, the Travs scored four runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. C Anthony Bemboom (two-run double) and CF Ruben Sosa (RBI single) plated the final three runs in the inning. RHP Kyle McGowin retired 18 of the next 19 batters for the Travs to preserve the 4-2 advantage.
McGowin ran into trouble in the seventh. Cards 2B Bruce Caldwell began the frame with a double and RF David Washington homered to right to tie the game 4-4. With runners on the corners and still no outs, McGowin was lifted for RHP Eduard Santos. Santos induced a first-pitch double-play and a fly out to end the inning, but the Cardinals took a 5-4 lead.
The Travs immediately re-tied the game 5-5 in the eighth after Sosa doubled and scored on a 3B Brian Hernandez RBI groundout.
Sosa finished 2-for-5 with a run, RBI, the double and a stolen base.
DH Raywilly Gomez extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 17 with a walk and a single and has a nine-game hitting streak and hits in 16 of his last 17 games.
Arkansas led in the sixth inning or later in all four games of the series.
With the loss, the Travs dropped into second place (one game behind the Cardinals) in the second half standings.
Arkansas will enjoy its first day off in 27 days on Monday before beginning a six-game homestand on Tuesday at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Corpus Christi Hooks and San Antonio Missions will come to town for three games apiece. First pitch for each of the first five games is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. with Sunday's start at 6:10 p.m. Visit www.travs.com for tickets and promotions information.
