New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Quinton Robertson won his first game of the season, pitching 7.1 strong innings and Chad Gabriel and Sean Danielson had 2 RBIs apiece as the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) knocked off the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees) 5-3 Saturday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. With the win the Cardinals moved within a game of .500 at 29-30, while the loss dropped the McNamara Division leading Yankees to 39-19. Starter David Seccombe (8-2) took the loss, lasting just 3.1 innings.

The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the second when catcher Peter Pilittere led off with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field for a 1-0 lead. New Jersey answered back without the benefit of a hit in their half of the inning to tie the score. Brandon Yarbrough started with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Seccombe. He moved to third on a fly out by Randy Roth, before scoring on a fielders choice off the bat of Carlos De La Cruz.

Gabriel led off the third inning with his second home run of the season to break the tie. New Jersey added one run in the fourth on Gabriels bases-loaded walk and tacked on two more in the fifth for a 5-1 lead, highlighted by Sean Danielsons two-run single. Danielson, who finished 2-5, raised his team-leading average to .364.

Staten Island made it 5-3 in the top of the eight off Robertson and reliever Trey Hearne. With one out and no one on, Kyle Larsen launched his sixth home run of the season to right field to chase Robertson. Cardsmanager Mark DeJohn brought on Hearne to face shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. James Cooper followed by lining a RBI single to center to cut the Cardinals lead to two. But Hearne worked out of further trouble when Reegie Corona grounded out to second to end the inning.

Ashley Hooks worked a perfect ninth for his first save.

The Cardinals and Yankees return to the field Sunday, August 21, as the Cardinals look for the sweep of the two-game series. Left hander Zack Zuercher is set to start for the Cardinals in search of his fifth win of the season, while the Yankees look to counter with left hander Garret Patterson (1-1, 4.33). Sundays game also features Support Our Troopsnight, in which the Cardinals and their fans will be honoring Americas brave servicemen and women at home and abroad. The first 1,000 fans will receive Support Our Troopswristbands, courtesy of the Picatinny Federal Credit Union.
