BURLINGTON, VT --- Oneonta scored all four of its runs on three homers and Dan Konecny allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings as the Tigers defeated the Vermont Expos 4-2 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Centennial Field.
Michael Holliman gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning off Expos starter Gene Yost. It was Holliman's New York-Penn League-leading 13th home run of the season.
The game stayed 1-0 until the sixth inning when the Tigers used two home runs to score three times. After a one-out walk to Holliman, Ryan Roberson drilled a two-run homer to rightcenter for his fourth home run of the season and a 3-0 Oneonta lead. Jeffrey Larish followed with his third solo home run in as many days against the Expos.
Konecny, who was touched for six runs over five innings in a start at home against Vermont on July 5th, returned the favor to the Expos on Saturday. Konecny gave up just two hits, a two-out first inning single to Leonard Davis and an infield single to Mike Daniel in the second inning. After the Daniel single, Konecny retired 15 straight batters until a two-out walk in the seventh.
The Expos tried to rally off the Tiger bullpen with single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Daniel led off the eighth with a walk and scored one-out later on a Lorvin Louisa RBI double to left.
A one-out hit batter, walk and RBI single from Carlos Torres in the ninth inning cut the Oneonta lead to 4-2 and brought the winning run to the plate, but Tiger reliever Anthony Claggett came in to record his fifth save of the season by striking out Daniel and getting John Poppert to field the game with a fielder's choice groundout.
Konecny (3-2) walked one and struckout four over his seven shutout innings for the win, while Yost (4-4) allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings for the loss. Yost had come into the game having allowed just three home runs in his first 59 innings of work before the three homers given up Saturday.
Oneonta (34-23), which moved a half-game ahead of Lowell for the Stedler Division lead with the win, had just five hits on the night. Roberson had two of the five hits, a single to go along with his two-run blast.
Vermont (20-39) was held to just four hits on the night as they scored just two runs in a game for the 15th time this season. Nick Long, who pitched for Vermont in 2002 and 2003, struckout four in two innings of relief in his first appearance for the Expos since being sent to Vermont from Savannah.
The Expos and Tigers will play the final game of the four-game series at Centennial at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday. 1,500 baseballs, courtesy of Echo Power Equipment, will be handed out before the game and fans can "Have A Catch" on the field following the game.
