San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio - The Springfield Cardinals defeated the San Antonio Missions 3-1 to take the series and hand the Missions their fifth loss in six games.
In just his second at bat for the team, Missions' catcher Rocky Gale scored Jake Blackwood on a fielding error by Cardinal second baseman Kolten Wong giving San Antonio an early 1-0 lead.
Missions' pitcher Keyvius Sampson had his longest outing of the season going six and two-thirds innings, but the Cardinals scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a two run lead that would prove enough to get the win.
San Antonio tried to get their bats going in the sixth, but Nate Freiman's one out single was erased when Blackwood grounded out into the second of three Cardinal double plays to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, Springfield loaded the bases with two outs on a single, bunt and walk, but Missions' reliever Dustin Pease struck out Chris Swauger to hold the Cardinals scoreless.
Missions' left fielder Dean Anna led off the eighth inning with a single but one batter later, Springfield turned its third double play of the game and eighth of the series to clear the bases. With two outs in the ninth, Cardinals' late-inning substitute Jake Shaffer made a diving grab to end the game.
San Antonio continues to struggle falling to 20-27 overall and will host the Arkansas Travelers in the opening game of the final three-game series of this homestand. Taking the mound for the Travelers is righty Johnny Hellweg (1-3, 4.40 ERA) as the Missions give the ball to southpaw Andrew Werner (1-5, 3.75 ERA).
Tomorrow's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and after the game Budweiser will sponsor Post-Game Fireworks.
You can catch all the Missions action on KKYX 680 AM, the home of Missions baseball with Roy Acuff and Mike Saeger.
