Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals completed a three-game sweep over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Monday afternoon, holding on for a 4-1 win at Whataburger Field. The Cardinals (23-27) have now won six of their last seven games and wrap up a 5-1 road trip.
Springfield's bullpen was tested due to regularly scheduled starter Tyler Herron being under the weather. Kyle Sadlowski allowed just one run on one hit over 3 2/3 innings in the spot-start. Nick Webber (4-1), Luke Gregerson and Fernando Salas went the rest of the way, combining for one run on four hits over the final 5 1/3.
Mark Shorey had a two-run single with two outs in the first, putting Springfield ahead to stay at 2-0 against Corpus Christi starter Tip Fairchild (0-2).
The Hooks broke through with a run against Sadlowski, after he was pulled with the bases loaded and two outs. Webber allowed an RBI single off the bat of Orlando Rosario, as the Hooks pulled to within a run at 2-1.
Jose Martinez ripped a solo homer to left field in the eighth, giving Springfield some insurance at 3-1 against Ryan McKeller.
A Corpus Christi error opened the door in the ninth for another big insurance run, as Shane Robinson's two-out single plated Tyler Greene for a 4-1 lead.
Fernando Salas was brought on after Luke Gregerson fired two scoreless innings. Salas was taken deep by Rosario, as his first homer of the year made it 4-2. Salas recovered though, retiring the final two hitters to earn his fourth save of the year.
Springfield takes a day off on Tuesday, returning to Hammons Field on Wednesday against the San Antonio Missions. The Cards will throw Adam Ottavino (0-4) on Wednesday night, while the Missions send Will Inman (4-2) to the hill.
On Wednesday, May 28th, 2,500 fans will receive a Springfield Cardinals Fan Scroll, thanks to Henry's Towing. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
