Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Mark Shorey drove in two runs and Jose Martinez belted his third homer of the season to lead Springfield past Corpus Christi 4-2 Monday afternoon at Whataburger Field.
The Cardinals, who completed a three-game sweep of the Hooks, improved to 23-27. Corpus Christi is 25-25 and has lost 10 of its last 14. The Hooks were last swept at home by Tulsa June 2-4, 2006.
As was the case Sunday, Springfield took a 2-0 first-inning lead. Shorey delivered a bases-loaded single up the middle to score Shane Robinson and Martinez. Tip Fairchild (0-2) allowed three of the first four Cardinal batters to reach base as Robinson singled, Martinez was hit by a pitch and Mark Hamilton walked.
An RBI single by Orlando Rosales three innings later cut the advantage to 2-1. Springfield starter Kyle Sadlowski walked Chris Johnson and Eli Iorg and struck Ole Sheldon to load the bases before Rosales' two-out hit.
The Cardinals added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth on Martinez' solo shot to left off Ryan McKeller and a two-out bases-loaded single by Robinson off Sammy Gervacio.
Rosales hit his first home run of 2008 in the ninth.
Nick Webber (4-1) was declared the winning pitcher. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Fernando Salas earned his fourth save.
Fairchild pitched five innings. He permitted three hits, a walk and struck out six.
The Hooks begin a six-game road trip Wednesday at Arkansas, with Brad James (5-2) facing Brok Butcher (3-1).
