Cards Score Eight Straight To Beat Travs

Hammons Field, Springfield, MO - Things were looking good early Sunday afternoon as the Travs built a 3-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings, but the Springfield Cardinals scored eight straight runs to send the Travs to an 8-3 defeat. Hainley Statia homered (1) in the first and Ben Johnson hit a two-run double in the third, but the Cards held the Travs to just three singles the rest of the way. RHP Bobby Mosebach (3-2) was saddled with the loss allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks.
Statia's first home run of the season, a solo shot in the first inning, landed onto the roof of the Cards' clubhouse past right field. Cards RHP Tyler Herron, making his class AA debut, walked Nate Sutton and hit Mike Collins with a pitch in the third. Johnson lined a 1-2 pitch to left-center scoring both runners for a 3-0 Travs edge.
After Mosebach set down the first six Springfield batters, A.J. Van Slyke led off the third with a bunt single that rolled along the third-base path. Matt Pagnozzi followed with a single, then Tyler Greene hit a slow chopper to third base to move the runners up to second and third. Mosebach threw a wild pitch while working to Brandon Yarbrough to score Van Slyke. Then Yarbrough singled to left to chase in Pagnozzi and a passed ball moved the tying run to second. Jose Martinez singled in Yarbrough to tie the game at 3-3.
The Travs had a chance in the fourth inning thanks to a single by Corey Smith and a throwing error putting two runners with one out. Herron got a strikeout before reliquishing the ball to ex-Trav RHP Bob Zimmerman who induced a fly out.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Mosebach walked Yarbrough then allowed a single to Jon Jay sending Yarbrough to third. Allen Craig lofted a high fly that bounced off the warning track for a book-rule double to score Yarbrough putting Springfield on top 4-3. A walk and a two-run single by Luke Gorsett made it a 6-3 deficit.
Zimmerman (2-0) earned the victory by pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He pitched around two walks in the sixth when Jordan Czarniecki grounded out.
Springfield tallied the final two runs in the game in the sixth against Bill Edwards.
Time of game was 2:51 and the paid attendance was 7,435.
The third game of the series is Monday at 7:10 p.m. The Travs have RHP Dan Denham (1-3, 0.39 ERA) pitching against Cards RHP Cory Rauschenberger (0-1, 10.61 ERA).
