Cards Get Complete Game Win
June 3, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Celebrating his 25th birthday, Rich Rundles picked up just the second nine-inning complete-game win in Springfield franchise history, as the Cards beat the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday night by a final score of 8-1 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
In earning the fifth complete game of his career, Rundles (4-4) allowed just one run on eight hits over nine innings. Rundles, who walked three and struck out three, becomes the first Springfield pitcher this year to record a complete game.
Springfield took the early 1-0 lead in the first, as Rico Washington picked up his league-leading 50th RBI, knocking in Reid Gorecki with a run-scoring single.
In the second, the Cards got two against Frisco starter Kea Kometani, who was making his Double-A debut. Iker Franco's RBI single brought home Brian Martin, making it 2-0. Franco later scored, making it 3-0, when Rayner Laya's single to right field was mis-played by right fielder Anthony Webster.
Springfield got three more in the third, chasing Kometani (0-1). Josh Pressley's RBI single made it 4-0. Brian Martin reached on a fielder's choice, driving home another run to make it 5-0. Mike McCoy capped the inning, singling home Martin to make it 6-0.
Springfield got two more in the seventh against reliever Danny Touchet. Iker Franco's second hit of the night, an infield single, chased home a run to highlight the inning.
Frisco got their only run of the night against Rundles in the seventh, breaking up the shutout. With runners at first and third and no outs, Jake Blalock grounded into a double play, one of four turned on Saturday night by the Springfield defense. On the play, Anthony Webster scored from third to make it 8-1.
Rundles gave up a two-out triple in the ninth, but got Jake Blalock to pop up to right fielder Brian Martin to end it.
The Cards (32-22), who end a three-game losing streak with the victory, are still one game behind Tulsa in the North Division. Jordan Pals (4-1) will go to the mound on Sunday evening, taking on Frisco's Ryan Jensen (1-0). Game time for the final game of the three-game series on Sunday is set for 6:05pm. The Cardinals return to Hammons Field after their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th to face the Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers, in the final home stand of the first half. Don't forget about White Cardinals Cap Night as 5,000 fans will receive a free white Cardinals cap thanks to Coca-Cola on Saturday, June 17th. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
