Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The Tulsa Drillers continued their winning ways Saturday night at Whataburger Field, edging the Hooks 3-1. Tulsa has won 9 of its last 11 games and is 6-0 against the Hooks this season. Corpus Christi (31-24) remains in first place in the Texas League South, however, by a half game over Midland.

Tulsa jumped on top of the Hooks in the first inning, taking an early one-run lead. Seth Smith worked a one-out walk against Juan Gutierrez, then stole second base. After advancing to third on an infield hit, Smith scored on a fielder's choice by Ian Stewart.

The Hooks scored their only run in the third inning, tying the ball game at one. Mark Saccomanno drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gutierrez. Josh Anderson then lined a base hit up the middle, plating Saccomanno from second on a close play at the plate.

The Drillers regained the lead in the fourth on a home run hit by Jordan Czarniecki. With two down, Czarniecki clubbed a Gutierrez pitch off the lower half of the left field foul pole. Tulsa added an unearned run in the eighth inning off reliever Jailen Peguero to take a two-run lead. The run scored off Peguero is only the third run he has surrendered this season.

In the loss, J.R. House had his 17-game hit streak come to an end, going hitless in four at-bats. House was robbed of a hit in his final at-bat in the ninth on a brilliant diving catch by left fielder Joe Gaetti.

Gutierrez (5-3) was the hard luck loser for the Hooks as he tossed seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Ubaldo Jimenez (6-2) earned the win with his six innings of work.

Game three of the series is set for Sunday evening with a 6:05 first pitch. Enmanuel Ulloa (3-2, 3.72) will get the call for the Drillers while the Hooks have yet to decide on a starter. Lefty Josh Muecke (0-1, 9.00) and righty Mitch Talbot (1-3, 4.53) are both candidates to take the hill for Corpus Christi. The first 1,500 kids age 12 and under will receive Hooks' batting practice replica jerseys courtesy of Coca-Cola.
