Drillers, Jimenez win again
June 3, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers got another strong outing from starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez and another strong performance from the bullpen Saturday night as they defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks 3-1. The win was the third straight for the Drillers and kept them in sole possession of first place in the Texas League's North Division, one game in front of the Springfield Cardinals.
Jimenez worked six strong innings to win his third straight start and improve his record to 6-2. He allowed only three hits and the one run. He walked two hitters and struck out five.
After Jimenez departed, a trio of Drillers relievers protected a 3-1 lead. Jim Miller recorded two outs in the seventh inning before turning things over to Josh Newman. With runners at first and second, Newman struck out the dangerous Walter Young to end the seventh. He then worked a perfect eighth inning. For Newman, it was his 19th straight scoreless appearance, a span that covers 23 2/3 innings and stretches back to April 19.
Manuel Corpas worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Drillers to gain his Texas League-leading 16th save of the season.
Tulsa took a quick 1-0 lead in Saturday's victory. With one out in the first inning, Seth Smith walked and stole second base. He later scored on a ground out by Ian Stewart.
The Hooks tied the game with their lone run in the third inning. Mark Saccomanno walked and scored on a base hit by Josh Anderson.
Jordan Czarniecki broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning with his sixth home run of the season. It was his first homer since April 22.
Tulsa added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Troy Tulowitzki singled, moved to third on an error and then scored when Joe Gaetti grounded into a double play.
There were only a combined 11 hits in the game. Czarniecki was the only player with more than one hit, finishing 2-4.
The Drillers have now won all seven meetings with the Hooks this year. The two teams will meet for the final time in the first half of the season Sunday night in Corpus Christi. Enmanuel Ulloa (3-2, 3.72 ERA) will make the start for Tulsa. Starting time on Sunday is scheduled for 6:05PM.
