Cards Fall Saturday, Head to Midland Sunday

The Frisco RoughRiders held on for a 4-2 victory on Saturday night, taking two of three from the Springfield Cardinals at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. Springfield is now just 1-8 to open the 2008 regular season, still just two games out of first place in the North Division.

Frisco's Max Ramirez broke a 2-2 tie with a sixth-inning solo homer off of Cards' reliever Jonathan Mikrut (0-1) to give the Riders the lead for good.

Springfield threatened in the ninth inning against Frisco reliever Brennan Garr. With two outs, AJ Van Slyke reached on a walk, then advanced to third on a bloop-double by Jose Martinez. Trailing 4-2 and with the tying runs in scoring position, Tyler Greene struck out looking to end the game, giving Garr his first save of the year.

Frisco took a 1-0 lead in the first against Cards' starter Adam Ottavino. Elvis Andrus reached with a single, then stole second base. John Mayberry's hit-and-run single plated Andrus for a 1-0 Frisco lead.

The Cards took the lead by scoring twice in the second. Mark Shorey started the scoring with his first home run of the year, a drive to right field that just cleared the wall, tying the game at 1-1. AJ Van Slyke followed with a triple, then scored on a sac fly by Pete Maestrales, giving the Cards the lead at 2-1.

Ottavino got touched for a home run by Corey Ragsdale in the third, as the Riders tied it at 2-2. The Cardinals' starter would last only one more inning, getting out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fourth with a pair of strike outs. In taking a no-decision, Ottavino gave up two runs on three hits in four innings.

Jonathan Mikrut worked a scoreless fifth, but gave up the winning homer to Ramirez in the sixth, as Frisco went ahead to stay at 3-2. Zack Zuercher gave up a run in the seventh as Frisco took a two-run advantage at 4-2.

Matt Scherer worked a 1-2-3 eighth in his first appearance for Springfield since coming off the disabled list.

Frisco reliever Chris Michalak (1-0) got the win by working 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Springfield will head to Midland, opening a three-game series against the RockHounds on Sunday. Sunday's originally scheduled starter, Adam Daniels, is now on the disabled list, so no Springfield starter has been officially named. Midland will throw James Simmons. Game time from Midland is at 4pm.
