Hooks Top Drillers Again

The Corpus Christi Hooks domination of the Tulsa Drillers continued Saturday afternoon. The Hooks never trailed in defeating the Drillers 5-1 at a sunny and windy Drillers Stadium. It was the fifth win for Corpus Christi in six meetings with Tulsa this season. The Hooks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Billy Hart doubled and scored on a base hit by Mitch Einertson.
Tulsa responded with its only run of the game in the bottom of the second when Justin Nelson hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot to right field.
Corpus Christi took the lead for good in the top of the third as Drew Sutton led off with a double and then scored on a triple by Tommy Manzella. Richard Paz followed with a base hit to give the Hooks a 3-1 lead.
It stayed 3-1 until the seventh inning when the Hooks pushed across two more runs with the benefit of two errors by the Drillers. On the day, Tulsa committed four miscues.
The Drillers missed a chance to score in the fifth inning. With runners at second and third and only one out, pinch-hitter Duke Sardinha flied out to left field. Corey Wimberly tagged and tried to score on the play, but he was thrown out at the plate by Sutton to end the threat.
Hooks starting pitcher Chance Douglass allowed only five hits and the one run in five innings of work to gain the win. Relievers Evan Englebrook and Samuel Gervacio combined to blank the Drillers over the final four innings.
Offensively, the Drillers were limited to only six hits and both Eric Young Jr. and Dexter Fowler saw five-game hitting streaks come to an end.
Tulsa's homestand will continue at 2:05PM Sunday afternoon against the San Antonio Missions. It will be the first of three games between the two teams. Tomas Santiago (0-0, 0.00) will pitch for the Drillers against Stephen Faris (0-0, 0.00 ERA) of the Missions.
