Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals dropped their third straight decision, as the Arkansas Travelers ended their own six-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Redbirds, on Sunday night at Dickey Stephens Park in North Little, Arkansas.
The loss for Springfield leaves them two games up on Tulsa and Northwest Arkansas, who are now tied for second place in the North Division, with just nine games to go in the first half.
Travs' starter Tommy Mendoza (4-2) was brilliant over seven innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Trailing 6-0 in the sixth, Antone DeJesus picked up an opposite-field ground-rule double to break up the no-hit bid. Daryl Jones followed with a single to put the Cards on the board at 6-1. Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso also followed with consecutive hits, making it a 6-2 game. Tyler Henley's sac fly cut the deficit in half, scoring Kozma to make it 6-3.
That would be as close as the Cards would get though, as the Travs got a run off of Tyler Norrick in the seventh to make it 7-3.
Bobby Cassevah and Bobby Mosebach each worked a perfect inning, keeping the Cards off the bases over the final two innings.
Springfield starter Brian Broderick had some ups and downs in his Texas League debut. He allowed an unearned run in the first inning, when Nate Sutton doubled and eventually scored on a two-out passed ball, putting the Travs up 1-0.
Arkansas made it 3-0 in the second, as Wil Ortiz singled with one out, then advanced to second on an error. After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, Jay Caligiuri delivered a sac fly to make it 2-0. Kevin Ramost followed with an RBI single, making it 3-0.
Broderick endured a rocky fourth inning, as Caliguiri brought home a pair with a two-run double and Sutton knocked in a run with an RBI single, making it 6-0.
Broderick (0-1) would work six total innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits.
Springfield (34-27) looks to bounce back on Monday night, sending Brad Furnish (2-1) to the mound against Trevor Bell (4-3), who has the top ERA in the Texas League at 2.33. Game time on Monday night in North Little Rock will be 7:10pm.
Springfield opens an eight-game home stand at Hammons Field, on Thursday, June 18th, as they take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Arkansas Travelers.
