Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals were limited to just one run for a second consecutive game, as the Arkansas Travelers took down the Cardinals for a second straight game, winning 3-1 on Tuesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Travs' starter Trevor Reckling was sharp, holding the Cards to just a run on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Cards' starter Tyler Herron was on for a third straight start, but for a second consecutive start, was backed by very little run support.

The Travs gave Reckling a 1-0 lead in the second, when Ben Johnson doubled and later scored on a an RBI single from Nate Sutton.

Springfield finally got to Reckling in the fifth, as Andrew Brown doubled and two batters later, scored on Jim Rapoport's RBI single, evening the game at 1-1.

The tie would be short-lived though, as Arkansas took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. After a lead-off double by Peter Bourjos, Hank Conger ripped a one-hopper at second baseman Daniel Descalso. Descalso didn't play the ball cleanly, then fired wildly to first base. The ball sailed into the Arkansas dugout, allowing Bourjos to score what would be an unearned run against Herron, giving the Travs a 2-1 lead.

Springfield had a chance to tie in the seventh and chase Reckling. With Brown at third and Pete Kozma at second, Jim Rapoport lifted a shallow fly ball to center field. Bourjos made the catch and fired a one-hop strike to the plate, as Honk Conger tagged Brown for the second out. Arkansas then brought in reliever David Herndon, who got Daryl Jones to ground out, ending the threat.

The Travs tacked on one more in the bottom of the inning against Pete Parise, as Bourjos tripled and scored on a grounder off the bat of Conger, making it 3-1.

Herndon went the rest of the way for the Travs, earning his sixth save of the year.

Herron (1-3) took his second straight loss, allowing two runs, one earned, over five innings.

Springfield (17-14) is still one game up on Tulsa in the North Division. The Redbirds continue their eight-game road trip, opening a four-game series in Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday night at 6:30pm. Trey Hearne (1-1) will throw for Springfield, while Northwest Arkansas will send Blake Johnson (1-2) to the hill.

Don't forget that the Cardinals will return from their eight-game road trip on Monday, May 18th, as they open an eight-game home stand at Hammons Field. The upcoming home stand includes an AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Night, a Triwest Military Thunderstick Giveaway and a Henry's Towing Cardinals' Keychain Giveaway.
