Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI -- San Antonio erupted for eight runs on eight hits off three Corpus Christi pitchers in the seventh while coasting to a 10-5 victory over the Hooks Tuesday night at Whataburger Field before 5,405.
The Missions improved to 14-18. Corpus Christi stands 16-15, 1 1/2 games behind Midland in the Texas League South.
Rob Semerano (0-1) opened the fateful frame in relief of starter Douglas Arguello up 4-2. Semerano gave up singles to the only men he faced -- Keoni Ruth, Jesus Lopez, Mitch Canham and Luis Durango as the Missions went station-to-station to pull within a run. Andy Van Hekken walked Cedric Hunter to tie the game and Mike Baxter delivered the inning's big blow, a three-run double off the left-field wall.
An out later, Van Hekken surrendered consecutive run-scoring doubles to Seth Johnston and Kellen Kulbacki. Erick Abreu entered the game for Corpus Christi and fanned Ruth for the second out, but Lopez struck again with the final RBI two-bagger of the attack. In all, San Antonio sent 12 men to the plate.
Brandon Gomes (2-0) picked up the win after starter Will Inman worked 5 1/3 innings. Inman was responsible for three hits, three runs, a walk and two strikeouts. Arguello permitted two runs, seven hits and struck out five.
The Hooks took a 4-2 lead in the sixth on Wladimir Sutil's two-out, two-run looper to center field.
Durango, Baxter, Johnston, Ruth, Lopez and Craig Cooper had two hits apiece for the visitors. Drew Meyer doubled twice and drove in a run for Corpus Christi and Collin DeLome contributed two hits, including a triple, and scored twice.
Frisco comes calling Wednesday for the first of four games. Astros starter Brandon Backe (2-0), on an extended rehab assignment, faces Jared Hyatt (0-1) at 7:05. The first 2,500 fans receive a Hooks seat cushion from your Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers.
