
Cards Cruise Past Travs 6-1

Springfield, Missouri - Ryan Jackson and John Gast led the way on Wednesday night at Hammons Field as the Springfield Cardinals handed the Arkansas Travelers a 6-1 defeat.
Jackson drove in three runs with three base hits including two doubles while Gast (2-1) delivered eight strong innings for the victory.
The Travs managed just four base hits including two from third baseman Luis Jimenez.
Now 2-4 on their road trip the Travs fall three games out of first place behind NW Arkansas at 15-17 in the second half (51-48 overall).
The Cardinals remain five games out at 13-19 in the second half (45-57 overall).
Eddie McKiernan suffered his seventh straight loss on the road making it through only 3.1 innings and allowing six runs on eight base hits.
Springfield struck quickly in the third inning for four runs then tallied two more in the fourth inning ending McKiernan's night.
Gast cruised through his eight innings allowing just one run on a homer by Roberto Lopez (6) leading off the fifth inning.
Gast retired the first 11 batters he faced and also set down the last eight before Kevin Thomas finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Jackson's first base hit, an RBI double past third base, followed a single by Jose Garcia and a hit batsman putting Jim Rapoport on base for a 1-0 Cards lead in the third inning.
Rapoport scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Adams, then Alex Castellanos crushed a two-run homer to left field (19) for a 4-0 lead.
McKiernan allowed a Daryl Jones single leading off the fourth followed by a walk to Garcia.
Both scored when Jackson doubled to right-center for a 6-0 lead.
Time of game was 2:35 and the paid attendance was 3,493.
The Travs try to come off the road trip with a win on Thursday night sending left hander Andrew Taylor (2-7, 4.25) to the hill against Cards lefty Nick Additon (2-0, 2.85).
First pitch at Hammons Field is set for 7:07 p.m.
