Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals made team history on Saturday as they clinched the East Division title for the second half. Although they lost their game against the Jupiter Hammerheads 4-3, second place Brevard County lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Daytona Cubs which was enough to give the Cardinals what they needed. The Cardinals entered play on Saturday needing any combination of wins or Manatees' losses to total two.

Playing in front of a record crowd of 7,011, Jupiter took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning of Cardinals' starter Oscar Alvarez (3-2), but the Cardinals responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Andy Schutzenhofer's ground ball got passed Juan Figueroa at first base for an error which allowed Terry Evans and Matt Pagnozzi to score.

The Hammerheads came back with three runs in the seventh to take the lead 4-2. Cardinals' shortstop Tyler Greene made two errors in the inning, including one on a dropped throw from Schutzenhofer when Alvarez had picked Jose Campusano off of first.

In the top of the eighth, heavy rains came that delayed the game 46 minutes, and during the delay, the second game of the doubleheader between the Manatees and Cubs ended, and the Cardinals secured their spot in the post-season.

The Cardinals cut the lead in half with a run in the eighth on a single by Joe Mather, but could get no closer.

Alvarez pitched well despite the loss, allowing just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings. James Russ (11-8) picked up the win for the Hammerheads by giving up just one run over six. Carlos Martinez picked up his 22nd save of the season.

The Cardinals and Hammerheads will finish off the regular season on Sunday at 2:05. The first round of the playoffs beings on Tuesday night, as the Cardinals host the first-half champion Vero Beach Dodgers. Tickets for game one go on sale Sunday at noon.
