Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (13-6, 45 - 44) defeated the Tampa Yankees, 5 - 2, in the series finale at Roger Dean Stadium. Marco Gonzales and Corey Littrell teamed up to lead the Cardinals on the mound, allowing two unearned runs in the third inning. Danny Diekroeger went yard in the bottom of the third to give the Cardinals their final lead of the game.

Gonzales made his second rehab start with Palm Beach throwing 19 more pitches than his previous outing. In tonight's win, he threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Gonzales found himself in a bases loaded jam in the top of the third after allowing three hits and an error committed by shortstop, Andrew Sohn. Dustin Fowler put the ball into a potential double play for the Beach Birds, but the throw was too late to get the last out of the inning. The slow relay allowed a run to score, giving Tampa their first run. Dante Bichette's RBI gave the Yankees a 2 - 1 lead at the end of the half inning.

Once Gonzales threw 40 pitches, Corey Littrell came to the mound to complete the rest of the game. In his 6 1/3 innings pitched, Littrell allowed just four hits and struck out seven. It was his third straight outing to not allow a walk. At one point in tonight's win, he retired seven Yankees in a row.

The Beach Birds at the plate matched the performance by the pitchers, scoring five runs in first five innings of play. Palm Beach got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Casey Turgeon led the inning with a double. Two batters later, Brett Wiley sent Turgeon home after grounding out to the first baseman, Mike Ford.

Once Tampa took the lead in the second, Diekroeger got it back for the Cardinals after hitting his first home run as a Beach Bird. With Turgeon on first, Diekroeger's two run shot sailed beyond the right field wall to put Palm Beach up 3 - 2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Carson Kelly touched all the bases after he led off the inning with a double. He was given a free pass to third after Tampa's starting pitcher, Vicente Campos, balked. Campos followed up the balk with a wild pitch, giving Kelly another free base. The Beach Birds added one more the next inning on Collin Radack's RBI single to right field.

With tonight's win and a Fort Myers Miracle loss, Palm Beach sits alone in first place of the Florida State League South Division standings.

After an off day on July 14, the Cardinals will hit the road to face the Clearwater Threshers in a four game series. The Beach Birds will return home on Sunday, July 19 for a seven game home stand. They'll face the Bradenton Marauders first for a three game series, and then play host to the Lakeland Flying Tigers for a four game series.
