Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - The Palm Beach Cardinals completed a sweep of the Vero Beach Dodgers Dodgers with their third straight one-run victory Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Cory Dunlap's 3-4 night could not prevent the 4-3 loss, which is the team's 4th straight immediately after posting a season-high 4-game winning streak. The Dodgers return home for a 7:00 PM game on Thirsty Thursday.

For the third time in the series, Vero Beach scored first. That run came in the third when Ryder Mathias led off with a single. He went to third on Xavier Paul's double and scored on David Nicholson's ground out.

Vero Beach starter Jonathan Meloan held that lead through his five innings of work. The 22 year-old allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out six. He has not allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings against Palm Beach this season.

However, the bullpen could not hold the slight advantage. In the sixth, Randy Roth singled with one out against Albenis Castillo. Ryan Barthelemy followed with a base hit of his own and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Joe Mather's sacrifice fly to left tied the score.

In the seventh, Rayner Laya led off with a single against Castillo. Sean Danielson reached on an infield hit and another wild pitch put runners at second and third. After a popout, Colby Rasmus was intentionally walked to load the bases. Zach Hammes then relieved Castillo and recorded the second out of the inning. But Roth knocked his third hit of the game to left field to plate two runners. Barthelemy added another run-scoring single to put the Cardinals ahead 4-1.

Meanwhile, Palm Beach starter Mitchell Boggs (9-6)recovered after his third-inning stumble. He retired 11 straight Dodgers at one point and allowed only the one run until the ninth. He walked Paul to start the frame and allowed a base hit to Nicholson.

The Cardinals then brought in the league's leader in saves, Mike Sillman. He struck out Blake DeWitt, but surrendered a single to Dunlap that scored Paul. Drew Locke then hit into a fielder's choice that moved Nicholson to third and he eventually came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. Sillman struck out Shane Justis for the final out to record his 26th save.
