Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Cardinals pitching and an early offensive attack secure a 6-2 victory and series victory over the San Antonio Missions.
Following about a 45-minute rain delay, Springfield's offense took advantage of San Antonio's starter Keyvius Sampson's lack of command in the first inning. Chris Swauger began the scoring with a two-run home run to left-centerfield. Greg Garcia then added an RBI single scoring Xavier Scruggs. With the bases loaded, Sampson gave up a two-run single to Cardinals pitcher Seth Maness, recording his first Texas League hit, putting the Cardinals up 5-0.
Sampson (2-5) issued four walks and three hits on 42 pitches in only two-thirds of an inning. Three out of the four walks ended up scoring for the Cardinals.
Pitching dominated tonight as Cardinals' starter Seth Maness (2-0) threw seven spectacular scoreless innings in his second start here at Hammons Field since being called up from Palm Beach. He has not given up a run at home through 14 and two-thirds innings, lowering his ERA to 0.83 in three starts.
Despite the rough start to the game for the Missions, manager John Gibbons received great pitching from his bullpen. St. Louis native Tom Layne stood out with five scoreless innings as he held Springfield to one hit.
During the bottom of the eighth inning, Springfield scored its first run since the first inning on a RBI single by Xavier Scruggs scoring Chris Swauger who led off the inning with a triple down the right-field line.
Springfield reliever Deryk Hooker looked to complete the shutout, but San Antonio thought differently. Two batters reached base on singles to start off the inning. Edinson Rincon doubled in the two runners off Hooker giving the Missions its first runs of the game. Keith Butler then entered the game with runners on the corners and one out. Butler recorded the last two outs to secure the victory for the Cardinals.
The Redbirds will begin a three-game series with Corpus Christi tomorrow night at 6:08pm. Springfield will send Cardinals Organizational Pitcher of the Month Trevor Rosenthal to the mound against lefty Brett Oberholtzer of the Hooks. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
