St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals won a high scoring affair 10-7 over the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday night at Clover Park.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on Mets starter Jordan Geber and never trailed as they picked up their fourth win of the series. The first four batters of the second inning each recorded a hit for Palm Beach. Sammy Hernandez laced a RBI single, Won-Bin Cho and Zach Levenson hit consecutive sac flies and Michael Curialle hit a RBI single to complete a four-run inning.
Mets catcher Jose Hernandez launched a two-run homer off Cardinals starter Hancel Rincon in the bottom of the second to make it 5-2.
Kevin Villavicencio extended his hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer in the fifth to make it 5-3. Vincent Perozo hit a long sac fly later in the inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. Cardinals reliever Angel Cuenca recovered to get Nick Lorusso on a fly out to end the inning and strand runners at second and third.
The Cardinals expanded the lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Lizandro Espinoza and a run-scoring ground out by Cho.
Hernandez cranked his second homer of the night, a solo shot, in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-5. Hernandez became the second Met this season to record a multi-homer game. Junior Tilien accomplished the feat on June 10th vs. Daytona.
The Cardinals gained breathing room by scoring three runs with two outs in the eighth inning. Eric Foggo took over for Brawny Reyes with two outs and the bases loaded. He walked Curialle to force in a run and Chase Davis followed with a two-run single to make it 10-5.
The Cardinals nearly mangled the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The shortstop Espinoza threw wide of first on what would have been the final out on a ground ball hit by Lorusso. The error scored Nick Morabito. Yohairo Cuevas then flew a ball to right field that was missed by Brayden Jobert for an error that scored Lorusso to make it 10-7.
Henry Gomez recovered to get Yeral Martinez to pop out to end the game. Hernandez was on deck as the tying run.
Hernandez went 3 for 4 with two homers, a single, three RBI and two runs.
Morabito went 3 for 5. It was his second three-hit game of his nine total games with St. Lucie.
Jefrey De Los Santos and Villavicencio had two hits apiece in the loss.
Mets first baseman Dariel Gomez went 2 for 5 to begin a minor league rehab assignment. He is the younger brother of St. Lucie manager Gilbert Gomez.
Espinoza went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles. Williams Sullivan was 3 for 5.
The Cardinals outhit the Mets 14-13.
Angel Cuenca was credited with the win. He gave up one run on three hits over 2.2 innings.
Geber took the loss. He was charged with five runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings. It was his second appearance in a minor league rehab assignment (oblique strain).
The Mets (36-70, 12-29) and Cardinals (56-48, 19-20) conclude their six-game series at Clover Park on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
