JUPITER, FL – Stuart Pomeranz, Andy Cavazos, and Mark Worrell combined to pitch a five-hit shutout over the Lakeland Tigers on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

Pomeranz (2-5), who has pitched better than his record would indicate, tossed six innings of nearly spotless baseball, allowing only three hits, two walks, and a hit batsman. Cavazos worked a scoreless two innings, and Worrell came on in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season. Only two Tigers base runners made it to second base in the game.

The Cardinals got just enough offense off of Lakeland starter Justin Verlander, the second overall pick of the 2004 draft by the Tigers. Verlander (5-2) threw a complete game in the loss.

John Santor led off the bottom of the second with a double for the Cardinals. One out later, he scored on a single to left by Ty Parker.

Parker finished with two hits for Palm Beach.

Thursday's game was played in only two hours, seven minutes. Game two of the series is Friday night at 6:05.
