Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—Good teams always find a way to finish what they started.

So it's only fitting that the Daytona Cubs ended their season-long eight-game homestand Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark the exact same way they started it—with a win.

The Cubs—fresh off a 9-2 shellacking at the hands of the Fort Myers Miracle in Game 3—took full advantage of four Miracle errors and capped off the night with a three-run homerun from first baseman Brian Dopirak in the fifth inning, as Daytona flipped around Tuesday night's score and pounded Fort Myers in the series finale by the identical final of 9-2.

Daytona starter J.R. Mathes (2-1) pitched seven strong innings, as he surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work to record his second win of the season.

Miracle righty Scott Tyler (2-3) played the role of helpless victim, as the Fort Myers starter gave up nine runs—five earned—in 4.2 innings of work, and never recovered from his team's defensive miscues and was slapped with his third loss of '05.

Offensively for Daytona, 2003 returnee Paul O'Toole went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles, a double, and an RBI to lead the charge. Right fielder J.J. Johnson also chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance including an RBI single, a double, and two runs scored, as Daytona scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to surge ahead for the victory.

With the victory, the Daytona Cubs won the four-game series over Fort Myers 3-1 and finished the eight-game homestand at an even 4-4 as they improved to 20-17 on the season. With the loss, the Fort Myers Miracle fell to 23-14 as they try to keep pace with the powerhouse Lakeland Tigers in the Western Division.

The Cubs will now hit the road for eight straight games on the western side of the Sunshine State, as they head to Clearwater on Thursday to take on the last place Clearwater Threshers for four games, followed by another four-game set against the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday at Bright House Networks Field, as the Cubs send southpaw Sean Marshall (2-1, 1.85) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
