Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - One night after giving up a season high 11 runs, the Palm Beach Cardinals (9-5) shut out the Bradenton Marauders (6-8) to pick up a 3-0 victory Wednesday night.
The Rundown
Austin Gomber got the start for Palm Beach and tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball pushing his streak to 14 2/3 innings on the season. He gave up six hits on the night while striking out five and walking none of the batters that he faced.
The first started a little shaky for Gomber as Kevin Newman singled in the first at bat of the game and two batters later Connor Joe reached as well on a fielding error by Gomber. The two advanced on the next pitch as it skipped by catcher, Brian O'Keefe, recorded as a wild pitch. Gomber then got out of the jam by striking out the next batter and getting a ground out to end the inning.
The Cardinals tried to cook something up in the bottom half of the frame as Oscar Mercado reached on a one out walk and got to third as the catcher, Tomas Morales sailed one into center as Mercado stole second. Mercado was then stranded at third.
In the bottom of the second inning, Blake Drake and Michael Pritchard both singled to start the inning. Brian O'Keefe then grounded into a 6-3 double play moving Drake to third. Drake was then stranded at third after Nick Thompson struck out looking leaving a man stranded on third for the second straight inning.
The pitchers then dueled back and forth until the sixth when the Cardinals opened up the scoring. Mercado reached first base on a strike out via a wild pitch from Yeudy Garcia. Mercado then stole second for the second time in the contest and was caught stealing third the very next pitch. Diekroeger reached on a walk and Grayson followed it with a single through the left side moving Diekroeger to third. Sam Street would then enter the game for the Marauders and would get the first batter he faced to pop out. He would then put Michael Pritchard on base after hitting him with a pitch on a 3-2 count. Brian O'Keefe would then walk with bases loaded on four straight pitches that would bring Diekroeger to the plate. Nick Thompson would then double in two insurance runs making it 3-0 through the sixth.
Gomber would then come out to start the seventh and get the first batter to strike out and then give up a double to Jordan Luplow. Luplow would then move to third on a Michael Suchy ground out and that would be the end of the night for Gomber as he reached 102 pitches. Rowan Wick would replace Gomber and get Pablo Reyes to ground out, leaving Luplow at third.
Wick and Silfredo Garcia would then close out the game by throwing two more scoreless innings, securing the 3-0 victory for the Cardinals.
Stat of the Game
