JUPITER, FL (August 8th, 2011) -- 23-year-old Tyler Lyons tossed the first no-hitter in Palm Beach Cardinals history, leading his team to a 10-0 victory over the Miracle in the second seven-inning game of a double header. Fort Myers won the first game 7-2, taking two-of-three in the series at Roger Dean Stadium.
Lyons (6-3), a 9th round pick by St. Louis in 2010 out of Oklahoma State, allowed only one baserunner on a fourth-inning walk, to throw the first no-hitter in the Florida State League since April 28, 2009 when Evan Anundsen of Brevard County no-hit Daytona 1-0 in a 9-inning game.
The left-hander from Lubbock, Texas, racked up eight strikeouts including striking out the side in the third inning. Angel Morales drew a two out walk in the fourth as the only baserunner to reach.
After scoring only two runs in the first two games of the series, Palm Beach exploded for 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits against Miracle starter Pat Dean (2-5), who took the loss. The Cardinals had three home runs, including two by first-baseman Xavier Scruggs, whose second home run of the night hit the roof of a building behind the left-field wall. Dean lasted only two outs into the third.
In the first game, Fort Myers built an early lead on Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, who allowed five runs (four earned) in two and one third innings. Miracle outfielder Oswaldo Arcia crushed a grand slam home run against him in the third to deal the majority of the damage. Martinez (4-2) took the loss.
Matt Tomshaw made his first start for the Miracle, and limited the Cardinals to three scattered hits and no runs in the first three innings. Clinton Dempster allowed two runs (one earned) in two frames, and Matt Hauser (2-4) notched the win with two scoreless to finish off Palm Beach.
Estarlin De Los Santos added a seventh inning two-run home run to cap off the offense for the Miracle in game one.
Fort Myers (17-27, 51-63) return home to Hammond Stadium after six games on the road (2-4). They will host a six game homestand starting with a three-game series on Tuesday night against the Bradenton Marauders. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
