Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springdale, AR - For the Cardinals, it seemed a bit like Groundhog Day as they began their four-game series with the NW Arkansas Naturals. It had only been four days since their last meeting at Arvest Ballpark and Springfield had visions of revenge on their minds looking to knock the Naturals out of first place in the North Division.

In a rematch of last Sunday's game in Springdale, the Cardinals sent lefty John Gast to the mound for his fifth start in Double-A. Jake Odorizzi, the key part to the Zack Greinke trade in the offseason, made just his fourth start with the Naturals.

A scoreless game after three and a half innings, the Naturals would be the first to plate a run in the bottom of the 4th. After a lead off double by Jamie Romak, the first hit off of Gast, Jeff Bianchi sacrificed the runner to third. Anthony Seratelli followed with an RBI triple off the left field fence to plate Romak making it 1-0. A fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases for Mario Lisson who promptly doubled to left to bring the score to 3-0. A sacrifice fly capped the scoring for the frame with the Naturals in front 4-0.

Gast lost control of the strike-zone in the 5th going 3-0 to each of the first four hitters of the inning. He retired the first batters on infield pop ups, but issued back to back two out walks. The free passes came back to hurt the lefty as catcher Salvador Perez blasted a three-run homer to left center, his 7th of the season, making it a 7-0 lead for the Naturals.

Springfield's offense was held in check by Odorizzi until the 7th inning when Daryl Jones led off with a double and Jim Rapoport singled to right with two outs to plate the first run of the game for the Cardinals. Patrick Keating came in out of the bullpen and walked Ryan Jackson before Matt Adams launched his 22nd homer run of the season, a three run shot, to bring the Redbirds within just three runs, 7-4.

The Cardinals bullpen faltered again in the bottom of the 7th inning after Daniel Calhoun allowed a one out single and was removed from the game. Kevin Thomas entered and walked a batter before allowing back to back singles plating three runs making the score 10-4. After a strikeout, Mario Lisson singled before Thomas walked two straight batters forcing in another run to bring the tally to 11-4. Thomas would strikeout Wil Myers to end the inning stranding the bases loaded.

In the 9th, the Cardinals added two runs to their tally as Ryan Jackson delivered and RBI single to center and Matt Adams plated a run with a fielder's choice to make the final 11-6. Adams finished with four RBI on the night.

Springfield will continue their four-game series with the NW Arkansas Naturals Saturday night at 7:05pm. The Cardinals will send right hander Scott Schneider to the mound against a starter to be determined for the Naturals at Arvest Ballpark.

The Cardinals will return home Tuesday, July 26 for a seven-game homestand starting with a three game series with the Arkansas Travelers. Tuesday, Maria's Mexican Restaurant will be giving away 2,500 Steve Carlton Bobbleheads.
