Tulsa Drillers News Release
In his last home start on July 17th, Rob Scahill tossed five shutout innings against the Arkansas Travelers. Friday night was much of the same for Scahill, as he through seven innings of one-run baseball, thanks in part to some amazing defensive plays. The Drillers backed Scahill with four runs, as they topped the Travelers 4-1 Friday night.
Coming into the match up the Drillers owned a 33-9 record when scoring first throughout the year. The Drillers looked to build on that record in the bottom of the second.
Bronson Sardinha singled on a line drive to right field, then
advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Sardinha came around too after Scott Beerer drove a line drive up the middle, easily scoring him from second base and giving the Drillers the early lead.
The score remained 1-0 after the second due to an inning-ending double play off the bat of Hector Gomez.
Through four innings Friday, neither team separated itself from the other. Both lineups combined for six hits and one run, as the starters, Rob Scahill and Eddie McKiernan were solid for their respective teams.
Between a Sardinha walk and catchers interference in the seventh, which allowed Beerer to reach first, Travelers interim manager Todd Takayoshi was ejected by home plate umpire Brian deBrauwere. The ejection came when Takayoshi began arguing the interference call with deBrauwere leading to his eventual departure from the game.
A sacrifice bunt by Gomez advanced both runners, giving the Drillers two opportunities to score and stretch their lead. After a failed first attempt by Brian Rike, Jimmy Cesario lined a two-out single up the middle scoring both runners.
Cesario collected his thirty-first and thirty-second RBI's of the year on the base hit, providing the Drillers with some much needed insurance, extending their lead to 3-0.
Scahill lost the bid for his shut-out in the top of the eighth. A leadoff walk, followed by a single would be it for Scahill as he was pulled in favor of reliever Joe Torres. Torres logged the final three outs, but not before allowing one to score.
With his night done, Scahill allowed only one run on four hits, while walking two, and striking out five.
Over his last two starts, both coming against the Travelers, Scahill has compiled a 2-0 record, throwing twelve innings, giving up eight hits, and striking out eight.
The Drillers again built on their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Thomas Field let off the inning with a ground out, but was followed by three consecutive singles and one walk scoring one. The bases would be left loaded, as Gomez and Brian Rike both struck out, ending the inning with the Drillers on top 4-1.
Dustin Molleken came on in the ninth to record his second save of the season, sealing the 4-1 victory.
Saturday will mark the second game of the four game series between the Drillers and the Travelers at ONEOK Field. The Drillers will send Josh Sullivan (2-7, 6.78) to the mound, with Andrew Taylor (2-6, 4.40) scheduled to start for the Travelers.
