Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - It was the first ever Cline Dental Garden Gnome Night on Thursday at Hammons Field. The Cardinals sent righty Joe Kelly to the mound to try and earn the split of the four- game set with the Drillers. Christian Friedrich took the ball for Tulsa.
The Drillers wasted little time in jumping out to the early lead. After Tim Wheeler laced a lead-off double down the left field line, Ben Paulsen gave Tulsa a 1-0 lead with a single up the middle. They would add another in the 2nd when Brian Rike launched a solo shot to the visiting bullpen.
Springfield cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 2nd as Zack Cox doubled with one out and moved to third on wild pitch. Jose Garcia then singled to right for his 31st RBI of the season. It was 2-1 after two, but the Cardinals would even it up in the 3rd. Just as Cox did in the 2nd, Ryan Jackson doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Matt Adams struck out swinging, but Alex Castellanos brought Jackson in with a double to left field to tie it at 2-2.
The game stayed tied all the way to the 6th as both pitchers settled into a groove. It was there in 6th though when Joe Kelly ran into trouble. Ben Paulsen walked to lead off the inning and Bronson Sardinha followed with a two-run homer to the grass in left-center. That gave Tulsa the lead back at 4-2. Kelly went on to strike out the side as Tulsa left runners at the corners. His night ended there with a season-high nine strikeouts.
Springfield mustered very little offense after that Castellanos double in the third. With their backs against the wall in the 9th though, a couple of clutch hits from Chris Swauger and Alex Castellanos tied the game at 4-4. Audry Perez led off with a double and Swauger brought the Cardinals within one with a pinch-hit RBI single. After two fly outs to center, Matt Adams walked, and Castellanos blooped a single to shallow left to tie the game.
After a scoreless 10th, Jorge Rondon couldn't keep the Drillers off the board in the 11th. A walk, a single and another walk brought Tommy Field to the plate who then delivered a bases-loaded double two score two and Ben Paulsen singled up the middle to score two more giving Tulsa an 8-4.
The Cardinals would go quietly in the 11th as Dustin Molleken entered in the bottom half and retired Springfield in order to complete the win for the Drillers. Tulsa took three of four at Hammons Field for the second time this season.
Springfield will begin a four-game series with the NW Arkansas Naturals Friday night at 7:05pm. The Cardinals will send left hander John Gast to the mound against righty Jake Odorizzi for the Naturals at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.
The Cardinals will return home Tuesday, July 26 for a seven-game homestand starting with a three game series with the Arkansas Travelers. Tuesday, Maria's Mexican Restaurant will be giving away 2,500 Steve Carlton Bobbleheads.
