Cardinals Drop Close Game to Orioles, 5-4

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2004) – The Johnson City Cardinals fell in the first game against the Bluefield Orioles, 5-4 on Sunday night at Howard Johnson Field. The Cardinals now sit at 30-30 overall while the Orioles are at 27-32.

Daniel Nelson (Los Angeles, Calif.) brought in the first run of the night from José Delgado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) for the Cardinals in the first inning of play.

The Orioles would bring in their first run of the night in the top of the second inning by Brad Wiggins. Bluefield would score again in the third with a run brought in off of a double.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals would tie it up at two all with a run from Brandon Yarbrough, but the Orioles' Juan Gutierrez would hit a home run in the top of the sixth to give them a one run lead at 3-2.

In the top of the ninth the Bluefield Orioles would add an insurance run to make the score 4-2 before sending it to the Cardinals for the final half inning of play. Chad Gabriel (Norwalk, Calif.) would bring in two runs on a double to tie up the score at 4-4, sending the game into extra innings.

The final run would come in the top of the 14th inning, when Alcides Melendez would score off of a base hit by Zach Davis for the Oriole win.

Brian Parish (Mahopac, N.Y.) (1-2) takes the loss for the Cardinals, while Ryan Brnardic (3-1) picks up the win for the Orioles
