St. Lucie Mets News Release
JUPITER, Fla. (August 21, 2015) - The Palm Beach Cardinals scored two runs in the fifth inning to come back and beat the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 on Friday at Roger Dean Stadium.
After a scheduled off day, David Wright resumed his rehab assignment and went 3 for 4 in the loss. He sprayed three singles to center, left and right and he scored the first run for the Mets. Wright played all nine innings at third base.
Wright is now 9 for 24 (.375) in his seven rehab games. All nine hits are singles.
The Mets held a 2-1 lead with one out and runners at first and second in the fifth inning. Miller Diaz threw a wild pitch that allowed runners to advance to second and third. Wright then fielded a ground ball at third base and opted to throw to first base for the sure out instead of going home to potentially save the lead. Mason Katz scored from third and tied the game 2-2.
Carson Kelly followed with the tie-breaking RBI single to put the Cardinals up for good, 3-2.
The Mets put two on with one out in the eighth, but Trey Nielsen got a strike out and ground out to end the threat.
Josh Lucas pitched around a two-out single by Victor Cruzado in the ninth to pick up his eighth save.
Kelly started the scoring for the Cardinals with a solo home run off of Diaz in the second.
Wright led off the fourth with a single and scored from third on a two-out base hit by Amed Rosario to tie the game.
The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Dominic Smith nearly hit a grand slam to break the game wide open, but his fly ball was caught at the warning track and resulted in a sac fly to put the Mets briefly up 2-1.
Cardinals starter Nick Petree limited the Mets to two runs in five inning and was credited with the win.
Diaz suffered his 11th loss. He gave up eight hits and three runs in 4.2 innings.
David Roseboom and Jimmy Duff held the Cardinals off the board over the final 3.1 innings.
Wright had the only three-hit game for the Mets. Jeff McNeil, Stefan Sabol and Rosario had two hits apiece.
The Mets (62-62, 27-27) and Cardinals (69-55, 37-17) conclude their three-game series at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday. First pitch in the rubber game is 5:35 p.m.
